What is Tung Oil?

Tung oil is made by pressing the seeds of the tung tree which is native to Southern China, Myanmar and Vietnam. Tung oil has been utilized for centuries as a natural wood protectant and was famously used by the Chinese to help preserve and waterproof ships and boats. One of the earliest known wood varnishes created was heated tung oil, chopped hemp, tree resin and lime.

Tung oil is a natural drying oil that hardens when exposed to air. Tung oil has the extraordinary benefit of penetrating into the pores of the wood, enhancing the natural color and figure of the grain while also drawing in our durable resin sealing and protecting wood from the inside. L.Co tung oil varnishes also contain oxidized linseed oil and our resin is soy oil based, two additional drying oils. The more you apply, the more protection you get as you build thin layers of surface film.

Our 100% raw tung oil is sourced and grown from a local farm in Vietnam.

Description and use:

L.Co’s Tung Oil Finish provides a good balance of beauty, protection, and ease of application for interior woodworking projects that create the look of a traditional hand rubbed polish with a natural sheen. L.Co Tung Oil Finish can be used alone or as an oil treatment and sealer on bare wood prior to topcoating extending the protection of your  finish and bring added depth to the wood grain. Because of the large amounts of natural drying oils added to our Tung Oil Finish, additional drying time is required. Available in high gloss, semi-gloss and matte sheens.

L.Co’s Topcoat is a fast drying varnish that provides excellent abrasion resistance and chemical resistance for high traffic and high wear interior projects such as chairs, table- top surfaces, parquet flooring, wooden staircases and kitchen and bathroom cabinets. L.Co Topcoat is formulated with soy oil, tung oil and linseed oil which adds a richness rarely seen in a fast drying topcoat. We have formulated L.Co Topcoat with more resin which prioritizes faster drying times and added protection. Can be used in combination with our Tung Oil Finish. Available in high gloss, semi-gloss and matte sheens.

L.Co Exterior Oil Treatment is a deep oil pre-treatment and wood conditioner that is applied to new wood prior to using L.Co Exterior Varnish. Using L.Co Exterior Oil Treatment has been shown to significantly reduce cracking, helps prevent discoloration and extends the life of finishing on outdoor surfaces such as fencing, railings, patio furniture, siding, doors, boats and marine surfaces. LCo Exterior Oil Treatment is formulated with maximum UV absorbers and a high percentage of raw tung and linseed oils.

L.Co Exterior Varnish has been formulated for use on outdoor surfaces such as fencing, railings, patio furniture, siding, doors, boats and marine surfaces to withstand water and harsh weather conditions. Using a blend of tung oil, linseed oil, ultra violet absorbers and resin, L.Co Exterior Varnish forms a flexible, beautiful  finish that extends the life and appearance of wood that is placed outside. Our Exterior Varnish has the same high quality ingredients as our interior formulas which makes it easy and simple to apply. Available in high gloss and semi-gloss sheens.

No competition.

Polyurethane (PU) is an extremely hard and brittle film that resembles plastic which hides the natural beauty of wood grain. Because of the brittle nature of polyurethane, it scratches easily and will begin to crack, peel and flake leaving the wood unprotected and damaged. PU is extremely difficult to fix and oftentimes the entire surface will have to be removed prior to re-coating or performing regular maintenance. L.Co varnishes contain a liberal amount of natural tung and linseed oils which are absorbed into the wood grain and provide a flexible finish that move with the wood. The added oils enhance the figure of the wood grain and make the wood appear more natural to the touch. L.Co varnishes are much friendlier to repair and apply than PU.

Nitrocellulose (NC) lacquer is also a heavy film based finish similar to PU that sits on top of the wood surface. NC has a tendency to yellow over time, offers limited protection from water staining and wear and is extremely difficult to repair and maintain. L.Co varnishes use a modified alkyd resin which is made from soy oil and will not yellow over time so you get water clear results every time. All of our varnishes are formulated with tung oil which is absorbed into the wood acting as a natural water repellent. Accidental repairs and maintenance is easier with L.Co varnishes: simply clean the surface, lightly sand, and reapply according to the directions on the can.
